Data Security, Hackers, Cyber-criminals and why you shouldn’t take a risk
Just because your business is small don’t think you will “fly under the radar” of hackers and cyber-criminals. Hackers consider the data security of small businesses to be weak or even non-existent so they can metaphorically “stroll through the front door” of your system and take what they please or worse encrypt (scramble) your data and demand a ransom to unscramble it so you can use it.
What steps you can take to maximise the security of your small business data
However, all is not lost, there is a number of basic precautions you can take to keep the bulk of your data secure. Further, there are also many businesses that specialise in data security such as SafeNet who you can contact if your problem is serious. Before contacting the likes of SafeNet you probably should be regularly backing your data up off line and storing that backup at a different location to guard against physical threats to your data such as fire or flood. As well as backing up off line you should at least try to see if you can encrypt your own data before hackers can get in and encrypt it to demand a ransom. Ensuring your data security by encrypting your own probably isn’t as difficult or technical as you may think and the benefits of such a basic activity are immeasurable. To get an idea of how straight forward encrypting pretty much anything is read the following article from PC World Magazine in the US – data security by encrypting almost anything.
